Day 1
Depart Australia and fly to Jackson Airport, Port Moresby. Get PNG tourist visa on arrival (100 Kina, approx. $50 AU). Transfer to the Hideaway hotel in Port Moresby for check-in. Final check of equipment, safety brief and introduction to staff.
Day 2
Depart hotel and transfer to Jackson airport domestic terminal. Fly to Kokoda airstrip on 10:30am flight. Arrival 11:10am. Experience a warm welcome from the village of Kokoda. Tour Kokoda village, Memorial, Museum and History talk on the 39th Militia.2:30pm climb to Deniki, passing through the Villages of Kovelo and Hoi. This is a half day of trekking and we expect to be in camp by late afternoon.
Day 3
We will make our way up to the Isurava Memorial on the way we will make a short detour and explore a crashed Japanese Plane (Aichi D3A). Small commemorative service held at the picturesque Isurava Memorial. History talk on the Battle of Isurava and Bruce Kingsbury VC. We will then make our way to Alola for the night’s camp.
Day 4
Leaving Alola we will continue on towards Eora Creek. On the way we will take another short detour and climb up to a Japanese position over looking Eora Creek. Here we will check out the Japanese tunnels and the spot where the Japanese fired their destructive mountain gun down at the Australians. History talk on Lt Col. Keys 2/14th Batt. And 53rd Militia. After lunch we will set out to Templeton's Crossing #1, the night's camp site.
Day 5
Leaving Templeton's Crossing #1, we will climb over the Kokoda Gap with magnificent views of the Yodda Valley. As we cross Mt. Bellamy literally the high point of the trip some 2,200 meters above sea level, we will make our way down to Kagi / Myola Junction and have a look at the wrecked American P40 Kitty Hawk. History talk on Bert Kienzle, Fuzzy Wuzzy Angles and the Coast Watchers.
We will continue on through the village of Naduri, (we may even be able to meet the famous Fuzzy Wuzzy Angel Mr. Ovoru Indiki) as we trek up between Kagi and Efogi #2 we will inspect the site where 6000 Japanese gathered to attack the 1000 Australia's entrenched on Brigade Hill. Making our way to Efogi village we will call in at the little museum which displays rifles, machine guns, mortars and other items found in the district. Efogi #1 guest house will be our campsite for the night.
Day 6
Leaving Efogi #1 we will make our way up Mission Ridge and then to the top of Brigade Hill. We will learn more about the biggest battle of the Kokoda campaign and the 2/27th Battalion. The site of 72 Australian graves which is lovingly tendered to by the landowner, we will learn more about the biggest battle of the Kokoda Track. There are some awesome views from the top with plenty of fox holes to explore as we descend down the southern spur. With a challenging log crossing we will make our assent to the village of Menari to make camp.
Day 7
After saying goodbye to Menari we will continue up and over the wall and down into the Nauro swamp area the site of wartime Nauro. Today’s history talk will focus on Damien Parer and George Silk who both set up camp in this area. After getting our feet wet crossing the brown river we will make our way up the New Nauro Guest House, arriving early in the day it will be a chance for much needed rest.
Day 8
Continuing on we will climb over the 9 false peaks and cross the Maguli Range. A short detour North of station 88, we will be able to check out a Japanese trench system. Stopping off at Ofi Creek for a swim and then climbing Iorabaiwa Ridge we will see how close the Japanese advanced towards Port Moresby, also why Tokyo ordered their withdrawal. After inspecting the Japanese defensive positions we will move down along the ridge to Ua Ule Creek where we will camp at the guesthouse for out last night on the Track.
Day 9
As we climb up Imita Ridge we will learn about the 14 Field Regiment and their enormous effort in hauling the 25 pounder (Artillery Piece) up to this position. Crossing the Goldie River we are on the home straight as we approach Ower's Corner. Finally and with much jubilation we have completed a trek that no will ever forget.We will then be picked up by 4WD's to Sogeri and back to the hotel via Bomana War Cemetery. Dinner and presentation at the hotel.
Day 10
10:00am Check out and transfer to Jackson Airport for return trip to Australia.
