Mt Victoria Tour

Our Mt Victoria tour is a truly unique Kokoda-based expedition, with all the splendour of some of the most famous mountain hikes in the world. Situated in the Owen Stanley Range of Papua New Guinea, Mt Victoria is the highest mountain. At 13,258 ft, or 4041m above sea level, this mountain is located north-west of Kokoda and the most interesting way to approach the climb is from Kokoda itself.

The journey up the north west face follows in the footsteps of Sir William McGregor, Administrator of the Protectorate of British New Guinea as it was in 1896 when he climbed the mountain for the second time. McGregor had been the first to reach the top in 1889 when he and his party made the journey from the south and once they passed 8-000 ft, they were probably the first men to ever pass that way as the native people had no desire to brave the weather above that level. Kokoda Station did not exist at the time.

The trek will take you over terrain completely different from anything you would expect in a tropical land like PNG. It is an alpine environment with magnificent flora and fauna as yet unaffected by mankind. The unique and beautiful flowers and ferns will fascinate you. The large marsupials, pigs and wild dogs that have evolved with huge chest cavities to handle the high altitude will amaze you. The scenery will take your breath away.

A highlight of the journey is seeing the spectacular glacial English Lakes, with exotic names Lake Ohma and Lake Ranu, located at about 12,500ft. Pristine and freezing cold, they are perched on the edge of the mountains above the clouds over the Yodda and Chirima Valleys. From there the trek to the top is a challenging walk seemingly forever up and down, past frozen waterfalls and intriguing rock formations, with the summit forever in sight but apparently unattainable. On finally reaching your target, the feeling of achievement will be bolstered by the fact that very few people before you have made this climb.

Taking on this trek is a challenge at another level from the Kokoda Track. The trip takes two weeks and in that time you will average 7 to 8 hours walking per day, commencing in jungle and tropical heat, finishing at altitudes where you will struggle to get a decent breath and where the cold air and high velocity winds bite right through your many layers of clothing.

It is not a journey for the faint hearted. All food and clothing for both trekkers and porters for the whole two weeks has to be carried - weather is too unreliable for food drops en route. This is all good, because it provides employment for the people of Kanga Village,at the other end of the Yodda Valley, who usually miss out on jobs on the Kokoda Trail.

At a price similar to the Kokoda Track, it includes all your porters but not your food, it is really no more expensive than the Kokoda trek - AND WHAT AN EXPERIENCE for your dollars!!

Kokoda Highlights Tour

For those who do not wish to walk the entire Kokoda Track but still wish to experience the history. You will fly to Popondetta and travel to the northern beachheads of Papua New Guinea where the Kokoda Campaign began. We will spend 3 nights at the Sananda Guesthouse and touring the sights at Buna, Gona and Sanananda. After this we will travel by vehicle to Kokoda Village where we will tour the Kokoda Memorial and visit the Kokoda Museum.

After one night at Kokoda Viallge we will start our trek on the Kokoda Track. We will trek up to Deniki for our first night on the track. Our second day will take us to Isurava memorial. We will spend the night here and wake up early for a dawn service. We will then turn back towards Kokoda spending one night at the beaustiful village of Hoi. Once back at Kokoda we will spend a final night here before flying back to Port Moresby the next day.

Just wanted to thank and to congratulate Kokoda Historical on the fantastic trip that I had! The organisation was exceptional and our tour guide Gary was superb! His knowledge and passion for the history of track meant that I didn't just leave having walked the track, but left with huge appreciation and awe of those who trekked before in such harsh and treacherous conditions. You know you have a good tour guide on your hands when other tour groups stop to listen in on the background and significance of certain parts of the track!

Our group was also fantastic. Being a part of such a small and cohesive unit meant that we were able to bond more closely then we would have been able to had the group been larger. Although Michael was the only one not from ADFA who was in our group, the humour and common appreciation that we shared meant that we gelled quickly!

Finally I'd like to thank the Legends! Those young men are fantastic and are a testament to those who walked the track before them. The passion they showed for their job made it that much more enjoyable.

What a wonderful trip, the best and hardest thing I have under taken in all of my 40 years. Dave is a wealth of knowledge on the Kokoda war history as well as local history and current Papua issues. His great sense of humour and attitude kept everyone’s spirits high and helped you forget how hard the day’s walk really was. The legends that walked with us were just that “LEGENDS”. ANZAC day was one of the most moving I have ever attended; Isurava Memorial is very spiritual and picturesque at dawn and the perfect location with all of its history to hold a dawn service. ANZAC day is also a very special and memorable to the Papuans. I will be doing the track again and taking two of my sons next time. Thank you very much for the journey Kokoda Historical.
